In case some have forgotten, I'd like to share the following definitions starting with the word we in the gay community know and love all to well:
Tolerance
–noun 1.
a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward those whoseopinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one's own; freedom from bigotry.

a fair, objective, and permissive attitude toward opinions andpractices that differ from one's own.
3.
interest in and concern for ideas, opinions, practices, etc.,foreign to one's own; a liberal, undogmatic viewpoint.
So, know that we've defined what it is we want, let's drill down to some of the characteristics of what it is what we want so badly:
Fair
–adjective

Objective

not influenced by personal feelings, interpretations, orprejudice; based on facts; unbiased: an objective opinion.

intent upon or dealing with things external to the mind ratherthan with thoughts or feelings, as a person or a book.
Permissive
–adjective

habitually or characteristically accepting or tolerant ofsomething, as social behavior or linguistic usage, that othersmight disapprove or forbid.

Tolerance is NOT a one-sided decision. I think we sometimes forget that tolerance is something that is sought after not only from the world looking in at the gay community, but also within the gay community. Whether it is someone's choice to affiliate with a religious organization, a social club, a social circle, a particular venue etc, we above all people should understand the importance of being tolerant.
